Gill’s observation is correct: the world is an incredibly interesting and diverse place, and the potential danger with a grid or system is that it can mediate spontaneous creativity and indeed the element of chance. What about pigeons stopping in a pavement square?’ In his classic reference book, Graphic Design as a Second Language, Bob Gill asks: ‘Have you ever seen autumn leaves, after they have fallen to the ground, arrange themselves in a boring composition? I haven’t. The grid should be seen as part of the process of how we design, and not simply as a tool for desktop publishing.įor example, International Typographic Style (often called Swiss Style) – which originated in the 1920s in Germany, Russia and the Netherlands and rose to fame during the 1950s in Switzerland – saw proponents such as Josef Müller-Brockmann consolidate theories into a manifesto indicating that the grid is a tool for thought, and should be used to systemise, to clarify and to reduce content to its essentials. Many designers have actively embraced the grid as part of their practice not only as a tool to inform where to place an item of text or image, but also as a mechanism for design thinking about why to place an item in a particular place. The grid should be used to aid the placement, order, hierarchy and structure of design elements, whether the design is for the printed page, online or even With type design, text can be cross-aligned, with varying type sizes occupying some or all of the lines of the baseline grid.įor example, if you have a 12pt baseline grid, the default type size and leading configurations of 10pt on 12pt leading, 20pt on 24pt leading and 40pt on 48pt leading will all fit to the same grid, cross-aligning and bringing a sense of structure to a design as the human eye looks for order and pattern. Finally, to effectively work with a grid type, images need to have a relationship to a baseline grid, which effectively anchors items. This is more visually recognisable in the far right poster as the curved rectangles look like a speaker getting smaller on the inside. I think shape is the main element which helps stimulate the thought of music and bring it to mind. I really like this quote because when you do look at the posters it is them 5 elements which Muller-Brockmann has used to portray music. These 4 posters designs were created by Muller-Brockmann for the ‘Musica Viva’ series. “If you look at Muller-Brockmann’s ‘Musica Viva’ poster series, there’s not a musical instrument or musician to be seen, he used shape, structure, motion, color, and typography to evoke the feeling of music.”- Mike Joyce, owner of stereotype design in New York city. They are consistent which makes it clear to see the swiss grid system has made a positive impact. The well-structured designs are powerful and clean. Muller- Brockmann’s work includes more colour than the previous two designers and I believe there are more aspects to focus on. I like these posters because again they are simple and the positioning of the type has been well thought through using a coherent structure. The black and white photography is also something I notice is used a lot in Swiss designs as it is simple and eye- catching.Īgain black and white is used in these designs with a little red being introduced on the left poster. The type in this design is clean and positioned in a forceful way rotated and bold. I really like this poster design because it shows how minimal elements arranged in a sophisticated manner can be so powerful and effective. The Swiss Grid Style was developed by Swiss designers like Armin Hoffman (1920), Emil Ruder (1914–1970) and Josef Muller-Brockmann (1914-1996).įocusing on the strength of simplicity and the quality of being graceful. (2007) Designing with Grid-based Apporach. Also these type of designs “enhance the visual experience of visitors”. The main concept of using grid systems in designing is to create a strong visual design which has balance and coherence. (2009) Lessons from Swiss Style Graphic Design. Using the grid systems allows you to arrange elements within a design well and in an orderly manner.ĭiogo Terror. Basic grid systems have been around ever since the middle ages but a group of graphic designers created a more logical and organised structure to work from. A grid system is a grid which is able to help graphic designers in organising information on a page.
